Maypop Passionflower is a hardy perennial vine prized for its exotic flowers, edible fruit, and surprising cold tolerance. Native to the southeastern United States, this fast-growing vine produces intricate lavender-purple flowers with striking filaments that give the plant a distinctly tropical appearance.
In addition to its beautiful flowers, Maypop produces edible fruit often called wild passionfruit. The egg-sized fruits turn yellow when ripe and contain aromatic pulp with a sweet-tart tropical flavor often compared to guava or passionfruit. The pulp can be eaten fresh or used in drinks, desserts, and preserves.
The name “Maypop” comes from the sound the ripe fruit makes when stepped on — the thin rind pops easily, revealing the fragrant pulp inside.
Despite its tropical appearance, Maypop is one of the most cold-hardy passionflowers available. In colder climates the vine typically dies back to the ground in winter and regrows vigorously each spring.
🌸 Pollination
Maypop passionflower is generally self-fertile and does not require another plant to produce fruit.
However, planting multiple vines nearby can increase pollination and improve fruit production. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.
