Prolific Hardy Kiwi is a vigorous and dependable hardy kiwi variety known for its strong productivity and sweet, smooth-skinned fruit. Unlike most hardy kiwi varieties, Prolific is self-fertile, meaning a single plant can produce fruit on its own. The vines produce clusters of small kiwi that can be eaten whole without peeling.
The fruit is grape-sized with smooth green skin and bright green flesh. The flavor is sweet, aromatic, and tropical, often compared to a blend of kiwi, pineapple, and melon. Hardy kiwis are smaller than grocery-store kiwis but are often sweeter and much easier to eat.
Prolific is valued for its reliable fruit production, vigorous growth, and the convenience of being able to fruit without requiring a separate male vine.
Key Characteristics
Fruit Quality:
Produces small to medium smooth-skinned green fruits that can be eaten whole. The flavor is sweet and aromatic with tropical notes similar to kiwi, pineapple, and melon.
Harvest Timing:
Typically ripens in early to mid-fall, generally from late September into October, depending on climate.
Yield:
Very productive once established. Vines typically begin producing in year 3–4, with mature vines capable of producing 50–100 lbs of fruit annually under good growing conditions.
Pollination:
Self-fertile. Prolific can produce fruit on its own without a male pollinator. However, planting a male hardy kiwi nearby can increase fruit size and overall yield.
Compatible male pollinators:
✔ Meader Male Hardy Kiwi
✔ Fairchild Male Hardy Kiwi
Growing Requirements
Hardiness Zones:
Cold hardy in USDA Zones 4–8.
Growth Habit:
A vigorous deciduous climbing vine capable of growing 20–30+ feet long. Plants require a strong support structure such as a trellis, arbor, pergola, or fence.
Soil & Sun:
Performs best in full sun with well-drained soil. Hardy kiwis prefer fertile soil and consistent moisture but do not tolerate standing water.
Maintenance:
Because of their vigorous growth, annual pruning is recommended to maintain plant structure, control size, and encourage heavy fruit production.
