The Himrod grape was developed at the New York Agricultural Experiment Station at Cornell University and released in 1952, a cross between the 'Thompson Seedless' and 'Ontario' varieties.

A seedless grape with a golden-yellow hue that matures in August. This medium-sized grape is a delightful dessert option that can be enjoyed fresh. These grapes also have a good shelf life, lasting up to 3 months! Resilient to zone 5, it is an excellent choice for cooler climates. Like most grape varieties, it requires a supportive structure to grow on and thrives in full sunlight to produce its plentiful clusters. Ensure you plant it in well-draining soil and provide sufficient weekly watering to nurture this vigorous vine.

Characteristics and Flavor

  • Appearance: The grapes grow in large, loose clusters and mature to a golden-yellow color. The berries are medium-sized with a tender, "slipskin" quality where the skin comes off easily.

  • Flavor Profile: The flavor is often described as sweet, delicate, and almost honey-like, with a juicy, melting texture.

  • Uses: It is an excellent table grape for fresh consumption due to its seedless nature, but it is also highly valued for making raisins, juice, and wine.

Growing Information

Himrod vines are vigorous, self-pollinating, and relatively disease-resistant, making them suitable for home gardens.

  • Hardiness Zone: The grape is quite cold-hardy, performing best in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8.

  • Growing Conditions: It requires a site with full sun and deep, loamy, well-drained soil. The vines are climbing and require a support system such as a trellis or arbor for optimal fruit production.

  • Maintenance: To maximize fruit yield and quality, the vines need regular pruning, which is typically done in the winter.
