Tauro, also known as Domenico Tauro, is a historic Italian fig variety believed to have originated near Terlizzi in southern Italy during the late 1700s. Though still relatively uncommon in North America, it has gained a strong following among fig enthusiasts for its exceptionally large fruit, vigorous growth, and outstanding flavor.
Key Characteristics
Fruit Appearance:
Produces very large figs with purplish-brown skin and a beautiful blush-pink to strawberry-red interior. Mature trees are capable of producing impressively large fruit, particularly during the breba season.
Flavor & Texture:
Sweet, rich flavor with balanced berry notes and juicy, jam-like flesh. When allowed to fully ripen, Tauro develops excellent sweetness and is highly regarded for fresh eating.
Tree Habits:
A vigorous, productive tree with a strong upright growth habit. Tauro establishes quickly and is known for producing abundant crops once mature.
Ripening:
Produces an excellent breba crop on overwintered wood, making it a particularly good choice for gardeners with shorter growing seasons. In favorable climates, it also produces a dependable main crop later in the season.
Growing & Cultivation
Climate Resilience:
Like most common figs, Tauro performs best in full sun with well-drained soil. Protecting branches during winter helps preserve the wood needed for a heavy breba crop in colder climates.
Container Suitability:
Excellent for container growing. Trees respond well to pruning and can be overwintered in an unheated garage or other protected location in regions with cold winters.
Notes
Tauro is considered a collector variety with a rich Italian heritage and an excellent reputation among fig growers. Its combination of vigorous growth, exceptionally large fruit, and outstanding flavor has made it an increasingly popular choice for home orchards. Gardeners looking for a unique fig that produces beautiful, high-quality fruit will find Tauro to be a rewarding addition to their collection.
