The Takoma Violet is a "Mount Etna" type fig variety found in Takoma Park, Maryland. It is valued for its exceptional cold hardiness, productivity, and delicious berry-like taste.  Similar to Violette de Bordeaux, this compact tree is perfect for small areas and container cultivation, thriving in Zones 7–10. The fruit matures from mid to late season, featuring a deep purple skin and bright red flesh that’s ideal for eating fresh or drying. A top choice for fig enthusiasts seeking rich flavor in a manageable size.

Fruit Characteristics

  • Appearance: Small to medium-sized fruit with deep purple to violet skin and vibrant red or amber flesh.

  • Flavor Profile: It has a "jammy" consistency with a strong berry-punch flavor and light seed crunch. Some growers describe notes of cherry and prune as the tree matures.

  • Eye: Features a tight "eye" (the opening at the bottom), which makes it highly resistant to spoilage, pests, and splitting in rainy or humid climates.

Growing Habits

  • Hardiness: One of the most reliable varieties for cold climates (USDA Zones 7–10), often surviving winters where other varieties fail.

  • Production: Known as a "workhorse" variety that produces a heavy main crop, often fruiting on almost every node.

  • Size: The tree has a compact and vigorous growth habit, making it ideal for small yards or container gardening.

  • Ripening: It typically ripens from late July through September. While it is an early-to-mid-season producer, it may ripen slightly later than the 'Hardy Chicago' variety in some regions.
