Sweet George (also known as Susser Georg) is a highly regarded fig variety known for its extreme sweetness and cold hardiness.

Key Characteristics

  • Flavor Profile: It is often described as one of the sweetest figs available, featuring a rich "sugar fig" or honey-forward flavor. Some growers also note a subtle hint of peach.

  • Origin & Type: Discovered in Vienna, Austria, it is a variant of the English Brown Turkey (EBT) type. Unlike the California Brown Turkey, it belongs to the Eastern/English lineage, which is valued more for its flavor than commercial shipping durability.

  • Appearance: The fruit is medium to large in size with skin that can range from purple and brown to greenish-yellow. The interior typically features a pink or amber pulp.

  • Growing Traits:

    • Cold Hardiness: It is notably winter-hardy and has been successfully grown in Zone 6.

    • Ripening: It is a late-season fig, often ripening in late September or October. Because of its late ripening window, it may require a long growing season or protection in colder climates to fully mature its main crop.

    • Crops: It is known to produce both a breba crop (early summer) and a main crop.
