The 'Pingo de Mel' fig (Ficus carica) is a highly valued Portuguese variety known for its remarkably sweet, honey-like flavor and productive yields. Pingo de Mel, which translates to "drop of honey" in Portuguese, is a biannual fig tree that hails from the Algarve region of Portugal. This fruitful variety produces two crops: the breba crop in early summer and the main fig crop later in the season.
The figs are slightly larger than a golf ball, with shiny yellow-green skin that withstands splitting during wet conditions. The flesh inside is rose-amber with a honeyed sweetness—often described as having a juicy, tropical flavor akin to honey drops. It is also recognized for good rain tolerance and reliable production.
As a vigorous shrub or small tree, it can grow up to 20 ft when planted in the ground, although container cultivation keeps it more manageable at about 6 ft. Despite their compact size in containers, these bushy plants are remarkably productive, yielding as many as 150 figs per season. Pingo de Mel is cold-hardy to USDA Zone 6 and produces fruit reliably even if there is winter dieback, as it bears on new wood. It is self-fertile and does not need pollination to bear fruit.
