Noire de Barbentane (NDB) fig, an esteemed French variety characterized by its large size, deep red flesh, and rich, berry-like flavor, is frequently compared to other renowned French figs such as Violette de Bordeaux or Bourjasotte Noire, and is cherished by fig lovers for its exceptional flavor and vigorous growth.

Key Characteristics

  • Fruit Appearance: Medium to large figs with a dark purple to nearly black exterior. They often have an oblate or flat teardrop shape with a small, nearly closed eye that resists splitting.

  • Flavor & Texture: The interior is a deep red, jammy pulp with a rich berry or strawberry taste. It is known for a balanced, intense sweetness and a "jelly-like" consistency when fully ripe.

  • Tree Habits: The tree is an aggressive, fast grower with an upright habit. It is a unifere variety, typically producing one abundant main crop.

  • Ripening: It is considered a mid-to-late season variety, often ripening about two weeks earlier than the similar Violette de Solliès (Bourjassotte Noire).

Growing & Cultivation

  • Climate Resilience: It has shown good resistance to rain and humidity, making it more reliable in damp conditions than some other dark varieties.

  • Container Suitability: While vigorous, it adapts well to large containers (20+ gallons), making it a viable option for growers in cooler zones like USDA Zone 6 who can move it indoors for winter.
