The Hardy Hartford is a variety of fig from Mt Etna. It was identified in Hartford, Connecticut, thriving in an exposed, yet sheltered location. This fig can withstand temperatures as low as -6° F. It yields fruits that exhibit deep hues of red-brown or violet-to-black outer skin, accompanied by shades of red flesh. A delightful tasting fig.
Key Characteristics
Fruit Appearance: It produces small-to-medium-sized figs with dark skin ranging from red-brown to violet-black.
Flavor Profile: The flesh is red or strawberry-colored with a sweet, rich, and jammy flavor typical of Mt. Etna varieties.
Cold Hardiness: It is reliably hardy to approximately -4°F to -6°F. Like other hardy figs, it can die back to the ground in severe winters and resprout to produce fruit on new wood the same season.
Growth Habit: It is noted for its vigor and precocity, often bearing fruit even when young.
Cultivation Tips
Location: Plant in a protected, sunny microclimate (such as the south side of a building) to maximize warmth and winter protection.
Soil: Thrives in well-draining soil; excessive fertilizer can lead to lush growth with less fruit.
Winter Care: While extremely hardy, applying a heavy layer of mulch around the base in late fall helps protect the root system in Zone 5 or 6.
