Desert King is a classic heirloom fig variety prized for its exceptionally large fruit and outstanding breba crop. It is especially popular among growers in cooler climates because its early-season breba figs are among the largest and highest quality of any common fig variety.

Key Characteristics

Fruit Appearance:
Produces very large figs with bright green skin and a rich strawberry-red interior. Fruits are often among the largest of any fig variety.

Flavor & Texture:
Sweet and refreshing with balanced berry and honey notes. The flesh is juicy and tender with a rich, jam-like center when fully ripe.

Tree Habits:
A vigorous, fast-growing tree with an upright, spreading habit. Desert King is highly productive and can develop into a large specimen if planted in the ground.

Ripening:
Produces a heavy breba crop on the previous year's wood that typically ripens in early to mid-summer. As a San Pedro-type fig, its main crop requires pollination by the fig wasp and generally does not ripen in areas where the wasp is absent (typically anwhere outside of Southern California).

Growing & Cultivation

Climate Resilience:
Performs well in regions with mild summers where many common figs struggle to ripen. Because fruit is produced on overwintered wood, protecting branches during winter is important to ensure a productive harvest the following season.

Container Suitability:
Excellent for container growing, allowing the tree to be moved into a protected location during winter to preserve the branches that produce the breba crop.
