Black Jack is a popular fig variety developed for the nursery trade and has become known for producing large, flavorful fruit on a naturally compact tree. Its dependable production, attractive appearance, and excellent fresh eating quality make it a favorite among both beginning and experienced fig growers.
Key Characteristics
Fruit Appearance:
Produces large figs with deep purple to nearly black skin and a rich strawberry-red interior. The fruit is attractive, meaty, and often larger than many other common fig varieties.
Flavor & Texture:
Sweet with rich berry flavor and a smooth, jam-like texture when fully ripe. The flesh is juicy without being overly watery, making it excellent for fresh eating, preserves, and drying.
Tree Habits:
A vigorous, productive tree with a naturally compact, spreading growth habit. Black Jack is well suited to home landscapes and responds well to pruning, making it easy to maintain at a manageable size.
Ripening:
Produces a dependable main crop during the mid to late fig season. In warmer climates, a light breba crop may also develop on overwintered wood.
Growing & Cultivation
Climate Resilience:
Performs well in warm, sunny locations with well-drained soil. Like most common figs, winter protection is recommended in colder climates to preserve branches and maximize production the following season.
Container Suitability:
Excellent for container growing. Its naturally manageable growth habit makes it a great choice for patios or gardeners who prefer to overwinter trees in an unheated garage or other protected location.
Notes
Black Jack has been sold under several different names over the years, and some growers believe it is closely related to or synonymous with other well-known dark fig varieties. As with many figs, naming can vary among nurseries, and plants sold under the same name may occasionally differ depending on their source.
