Ruby Autumn Olive is a productive and extremely hardy fruiting shrub known for its abundant crops of small, bright red berries and its ability to improve soil fertility. Like other members of the Elaeagnus genus, autumn olive is a nitrogen-fixing plant, meaning it forms a beneficial relationship with soil microbes that allows it to capture nitrogen from the air and enrich the surrounding soil. This makes it especially valuable in food forests, permaculture systems, and challenging soils where other fruiting plants may struggle.
The shrub produces heavily speckled ruby-red berries that ripen in the fall. The fruit has a pleasant balance of sweetness and tartness when fully ripe and is commonly used for jams, sauces, fruit leather, and other preserved foods. The berries are also notable for being extremely high in lycopene, an antioxidant also found in tomatoes.
In addition to its fruit production, Ruby Autumn Olive is an attractive and resilient landscape plant. The silvery-green foliage provides visual interest, and the fragrant cream-colored spring flowers attract pollinators. Its ability to tolerate drought, poor soils, and cold winters makes it one of the most adaptable fruiting shrubs available.
Key Characteristics
Fruit Quality:
Produces small bright red berries with silvery speckles. The fruit has a sweet-tart flavor and is excellent for jams, sauces, fruit leather, and other processed uses.
Harvest Timing:
Typically ripens in mid to late fall depending on climate.
Yield:
Extremely productive once established. Mature shrubs can produce very large quantities of berries annually.
Pollination:
Partially self-fertile but produces heavier crops when planted with another autumn olive variety.
Compatible pollinators may include:
✔ Garnet Autumn Olive
✔ Ruby Autumn Olive
Planting two shrubs nearby generally improves fruit set and yield.
Growing Requirements
Hardiness Zones:
Cold hardy in USDA Zones 3–8, tolerating winter temperatures down to approximately -30°F once established.
Utah Growing Notes:
Autumn olive performs very well in Utah and is highly tolerant of drought, poor soils, and cold winters. Once established it requires little irrigation and is well suited to challenging growing conditions.
Growth Habit:
A vigorous deciduous shrub that typically grows 8–12 feet tall and wide. Plants can be pruned to maintain a smaller size or trained as a dense hedge.
Soil & Sun:
Performs best in full sun but tolerates partial shade. Extremely adaptable to a wide range of soils, including poor or sandy soils.
Maintenance:
Very low maintenance. Occasional pruning can help control size and encourage new fruiting growth. The plant also fixes nitrogen in the soil, which can improve soil fertility over time.
