Garnet Autumn Olive is a productive and hardy fruiting shrub known for its abundant crops of bright red berries and exceptional adaptability. Like other autumn olive varieties, Garnet is valued not only for its fruit but also for its ability to improve soil fertility. The plant is a nitrogen fixer, forming a beneficial relationship with soil microbes that allows it to capture nitrogen from the air and enrich the surrounding soil. This makes it a valuable addition to food forests, permaculture plantings, and challenging soils where other fruiting plants may struggle.
The shrub produces large numbers of small red berries with distinctive silvery speckles that ripen in the fall. The fruit has a pleasant sweet-tart flavor when fully ripe and is commonly used for jams, sauces, fruit leather, and other preserved foods. Autumn olive berries are also notable for their extremely high lycopene content, an antioxidant also found in tomatoes.
In addition to its fruit production, Garnet Autumn Olive is an attractive and resilient landscape plant. The shrub has silvery-green foliage and produces clusters of fragrant cream-colored flowers in spring that attract pollinators. Its tolerance of drought, poor soils, and cold winters makes it one of the most adaptable fruiting shrubs available.

Planting two shrubs nearby generally improves fruit set and yield.
Growing Requirements
Hardiness Zones:
Cold hardy in USDA Zones 3–8, tolerating winter temperatures down to approximately -30°F once established.
Utah Growing Notes:
Autumn olive performs very well in Utah and is highly tolerant of drought, poor soils, and cold winters. Once established it requires minimal irrigation and thrives in challenging growing conditions.
